Undertakers routinely take jewelry from corpses—so I've heard—if the family requests they be buried with, say, a ring, so I'm sure taking dental gold and refining it down isn't much different—especially now, with gold being over US$1000 an ounce.
(Follow-up: I never got dry socket, but the damn space in my gums hasn't fully healed yet, dammit.)
