This used to be a more common sight in my neighborhood; I still have to ask myself, why does anyone want to shoot up in public and nod in the middle of the sidewalk where they're vulnerable? This is so sad; I saw this guy near the church at the corner of 10th and A this afternoon, right after school let out and not too far from the Boys' Club.

Some of these people do it as a means of attention, but once past a certain amount of abuse, it just happens anywhere, they no longer are in any sort of mind for control.

This guy could have been taking a break from painting that fence. ;)

Addictions are so fucking sad.

One part of me thinks that by shooting up in public, there's a better chance someone will get you medical help if you need it. Many passers-by probably wouldn't stop to help someone in distress (especially in large cities), but a few would. So, if you overdose, you'll have a better chance of getting through it if you pass out or start having seizures in public. If you're in a room alone, or out of sight of competent people, it's likely you'll die.

The other part of me knows that addicts simply don't give a shit where they shoot up. Any place is just fine, as long as it's right NOW. My sister-in-law was a prime example. She couldn't have cared less, as long as she was high. And, when you're that stoned, the world ceases to exist.

The guy in this picture probably has nothing worth stealing, and truthfully, addicts will risk their lives for the hit.
